📸 The Real Victory: How Photography Helped Me Beat Crohn’s — and Become Jacksonville’s Best Photographer

Almost a year ago, something beautiful and unexpected happened.

I was selected as the Best Photographer in Jacksonville.

But what truly made it meaningful wasn’t the trophy or the title — it was what it represented in my life: a personal victory over Crohn’s disease. A silent battle I’ve been fighting for over 20 years.

This is not just a post about recognition. It’s a story of resilience, healing, fatherhood, passion for photography, and the power of art to transform lives. And maybe — just maybe — it will inspire someone else out there to keep going.

🌱 It All Started with a Diagnosis

More than two decades ago, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a chronic and incurable condition that affects the digestive tract and causes severe inflammation and pain.

I still remember the doctor’s words clearly:
“This is for life. You’ll need to find something that helps you manage your stress.”

And that’s when I found photography.

At first, it was a way to escape. A way to channel my energy into something creative and calming. But little by little, that hobby evolved into a calling. Into something bigger than myself.

Today, I’m a full-time professional photographer in Jacksonville, capturing memories for families, moms-to-be, newborns, and little ones celebrating their first birthday with colorful cake smash sessions.

And most importantly… thanks to photography, I’ve been able to keep Crohn’s in remission.
Photography literally gave me my life back.

🏆 A Night I’ll Never Forget: Best Photographer in Jacksonville

When I was nominated for Best Photographer in Jacksonville, I was honored — but didn’t expect to win. I thought, “There are so many talented photographers here. I’m just doing what I love.”

I attended the event with my wife and my son. We didn’t know anyone. We sat at a table full of strangers, smiling politely, quietly taking it all in.

Then, the moment came.

They announced the winner…
And they called my name.

“Oswar Nieves.”

I was overwhelmed with emotion. I walked up, received the award, and returned to my seat — where my son looked at me with glowing eyes and said:

“Dad, you won!”

That sentence? Worth more than any title.
In that moment, I didn’t just win an award —
I won in the eyes of my son.

🎯 I Don’t Compete With Photographers — I Compete With Crohn’s

Let me be honest.

I don’t see other photographers as competition. I admire them. I celebrate them. I cheer for them.

Winning this award didn’t make me feel like I was “better than anyone.”
It felt more like I had shouted at Crohn’s…
“You didn’t stop me. I WON.”

Because to me, awards and votes don’t define greatness.

Being the best photographer doesn’t come from likes or followers.
It comes when the best photographers respect your work. When those you admire speak highly of your talent. When your clients cry happy tears because of the images you created.

That’s when you know you’re doing something right.

🌟 Then Came the Bigger Surprise: Best Photographer in Florida

As if the Jacksonville recognition wasn’t enough, later that same year I was also named Best Photographer in Florida.

And not just that — I became the first Latino photographer to win both awards.

It was surreal. And it was bigger than me.
It was a message to every Hispanic creative in Florida and beyond:

“You belong. Your art matters. Your story has a place here.”

That’s why I chose not to enter any competitions this year. 2024 was my year — and now, it’s someone else’s turn to shine.

After the awards, I made a decision:

This year would be different.

No chasing trophies.
No pressure to prove anything.
Just me, my family, my health, and Oswar Photography.

I’ve refocused on what matters most:

Creating one-of-a-kind experiences for my clients.
Growing as a maternity and newborn photographer.
Improving my health.
Being present for every moment with my son.

Because when you’ve battled a chronic illness, you learn how precious time really is.
